MUSIC TEACHERS ASSOCIATION OF GREATER BALTIMORE is an organization of
congenial music teachers who encourage each other and their students to
grow in musical knowledge and skills. The organization began in 1967 in
the Towson area and now includes teachers from a wide geographical
area—from Delaware, Pennsylvania, and counties surrounding and including
the city of Baltimore. This year’s membership directory lists teachers
who give instruction in piano, composition, violin, flute, guitar, voice
and cello at all levels.
Activities for students include three
theme recitals, a masterclass, an honors recital, and three sessions of
Triple Crown. Triple Crown provides students with written adjudication
by two participating teachers; the 3rd session of Triple Crown requires
performance of memorized music of four contrasting
music periods.
Meetings for teachers include teaching
demonstrations, and talks on subjects of musical and teaching interest.
Meetings always include refreshments and camaraderie. We welcome you to
join us. Please contact our Membership Chairman, Joanna Greenwood at

The first meeting of the year was held on October 17 at the home of Reba Babst. A round table discussion chaired by Barbara Gruver centered on the topic "Music Teaching that Engages Hearts and Minds". Members shared thoughts and ideas on the following questions.
1. How do we create a physical and mental environment that really stimulates students' hearts and minds?
2. What music literature and specific editions, as well as books, videos and websites have provided the most inspiration for our students? (and for us)
3. How do we teach responsibility, problem solving, decision making and evaluation?
4. How can we best communicate an idea: appropriateness, priority, student's learning style, non-verbal communication, use of imagery?
Our first student recital will be held on November 21. The theme will be "My music makes me feel like .......". Students will share a sentence or two before they play describing how they feel about their piece . |
